Why I Organize Community Clean-Ups

One day in May, 2019 while running errands at the mall, I noticed a disturbing amount of trash along the sidewalk. Seeing all that litter was heartbreaking and inspired me to take action.

There are so many signs urging us to “clean up after ourselves,” yet litter still fills our streets. If we all followed these simple reminders, we could create a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.

I organize these clean-ups—to make a real difference through action, not just words. Together, we can keep our community and planet beautiful.

Why Join Me?

By participating, you’re helping to undo the impact of littering—whether it’s that stray wrapper or any other waste left behind. Each clean-up helps us restore and beautify our community. You can see upcoming events and sign up here.

It’s Easy and Fun!

Clean-ups aren’t exhausting—you’ll be surprised how enjoyable it can be to pick up scraps, meet new people, all the while chatting and even laughing along the way!

It’s Rewarding!

After a simple walk of about an hour, it feels great to have done something good...and touched grass :-)

In order to get the feel of how it is like to organize your own trash cleanup before doing our first one, we went on a small part of the Saratoga Creek Trail and filled up two full bags of trash with not a lot of walking. By doing this, we found that it was not so hard to actually host our own cleanup, because it is simply just walking, talking, and picking up trash into bags.

On this day, we went to a trash cleanup hosted by the Creek Connections Action Group, which gave us a look at how other people host trash cleanups. It was on a path along the Calabazas Creek, and we filled up two full trash bags alone with a short distance, and combined with the work of other people, we filled a full pickup truck with trash bags!
